What is a PAN no ?
PAN is an acronym of Permanent Account Number. PAN is a unique 10 character alpha numeric number allotted to someone who applies to the Income Tax Dept of the government of India. PAN is used as an unique identity number and for all kind of income tax work with the IT department of GOI.
When you apply for a PAN (Permanent Account Number), you get a plastic card quoting your PAN no , you photograph, name , father’s name and date of birth. This card is called PAN Card.
What do the 10 digits in the PAN number stand for ?
PAN no is always alphanumeric and has 10 characters. The 10 digits of PAN number are always on the following format only.
First 5 digits are Alphabets, out of which first 3 letters are random series where as 4th letter shows the type of PAN and 5th letter is the first letter of your surname.
Next 4 digits are Numerics. These are also sequential numbers allotted automatically.
The last digit is an Alphabet known as check digit.
This summarises your 10 digit PAN number.
How do I apply for a new PAN or modify my existing PAN card ?
You can apply for a new PAN car or modification of details in your existing PAN card by Online or Offline mode. Offline application requires you to fill the PAN application, physically sign it, attach supporting documents & photograph and submit the same to income tax office by post.
An Online application can be made using your aadhar or digilocker and in that case no documentation is required. But if you don’t have AADHAR or Digi Locker, then you need to provide the documents upload, fill the form online and submit. If you face difficulty or need any assistance doing this you can contact the TRPs (Tax Return Prepares) or CAs (Chartered Accountants) or Income Tax advisors or your financial advisor.
How do I link my PAN number with AADHAR ?
Linking your PAN Card with AADHAR is a must and hence while you file your income tax return, it is advised that you must link your aadhar number to pan number. There are 2 easy options to link PAN & AADHAR.
Option to Link PAN with AADHAR using Web/Online
Step 1. Go to Income Tax e-Filing website
Step 2. Mention your PAN and Aadhaar number on the web form. Step 3. Write your name as in your Aadhaar card. Step 4. Enter your year of birth as in your Aadhaar card. Step 5. Verify the captcha code . Step 6. Click on the “Link Aadhaar” tab coming on your sreen. Step 7. A confirmation message will pop up before you confirming that your Aadhaar will be successfully linked with PAN no.
Option to Link PAN with AADHAR using SMS/Mobile
If you don’t have access to internet & web, don’t worry, you can still link your PAN & AADHAR by sending a text SMS.
Step 1. Take your mobile number which is registered with AADHAR database.
Step 2. Type a text message in the format. UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>
Step 3. Now send the SMS to either 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number
